If you have a family history or other risk factors for colorectal polyps or cancer, talk to your doctor about screening at a younger age or more frequently.
Common screenings and tests include:
- Colonoscopy. This painless test checks the entire colon with a thin, lighted tube.
- Digital rectal exam. In this test, a doctor feels the rectum for abnormalities.
- Fecal occult blood test (FOBT). This test is used to detect hidden blood in stool (feces).
- Sigmoidoscopy. This test checks the lower part of the colon with a thin, lighted tube.
